Assemble a Quiver of Putters

A few of you have asked about the “quiver of putters” mentioned in my Clone Golf Clubs: Are They Good Enough? A Real World Answer report I wrote a few years back (and occasionally update). Two questions that come to mind (and paraphrased) are:
- Are we allowed to carry more than one putter in our bag?
- I thought there’s a 14-club limit; how are you able to carry a quiver of putters with you when playing a round?
More Than One Putter
The answer to the first question is yes. As long as we stay within the 14-club limit. this means that if you want to carry 2 (or more) putters, you’ve got to take out and leave behind an equal number of clubs.
“Why would I want to do that?” you ask. “The pros don’t do it.” Uhm, some of them do. Sometimes. Sergio Garcia did it recently at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
Carrying a Quiver Around
As for the second question, yes, of course there’s a 14-club limit, and no, I don’t carry a quiver of putters around with me on a round. I sometimes bring it with me to the practice green, before a round, and go through them to see which one feels right to me that day; it’s really mostly a feel thing for me… no science to it at all. I put the winner in my bag for the round, and leave the quiver behind.
So, should you do something like this too? Maybe. If you’re regularly having problems with your putting, this is something you may want to try and see if it helps. If your putting’s OK, leave it alone; why mess with it?
