How to Hit Backhand Shots

Golfdirt QuicktipBackhand golf shots are rare, not to mention awkward. They’re usually used as a last resort, when you can’t take a normal stance due to some obstruction — when your ball is up against a wall, for instance, and the only possible way to hit it is backhanded, with the clubhead turned over and underneath the shaft.

But they can be hit. You’ve probably seen pros on TV hit use them on occasion to get their wayward balls out of trouble. No reason why you can’t. Some tips:

  • Get steady and stable. It’s hard enough to hit a controlled, normal shot when you’re not stable; with a backhander, keeping yourself steady is vital.
  • Just get it out of trouble. This affects your club selection (just enough to get you out). No heroics. Heck, how many times have you pulled off a heroic shot hitting normally? And you want try it backhanded? Yeah, right.
  • Use the 7-Iron. Interestingly enough, lots of folks say that’s their go-to club for backhanders. Try it.
