You have just hit a great drive but it runs into a fairway bunker! You are still a long way from the green so you want to get out and get as far as possible up the fairway. So what is the easiest way to get out and get a long way up the fairway?
The first thing is that you do not want to play the same sort of bunker shot you would from a greenside bunker (where you need to float the ball up and out to land softly on the green). Take any sand with your shot and the ball will not fly so far. And there is the clue to hitting out of a fairway bunker: You want to hit the ball taking little or no sand with it.

Distance control from a bunker isn’t easy to learn. In fact, it’s one of the hardest things in golf to master. Golf instruction and reading golf tips help, but it takes practice to learn how to hit it close to the pin from different bunkers. But even a modest improvement here cuts strokes from your scores and lowers golf handicaps.
The perfect set-up for right-handed players is to aim left of the target, generating a slight fade. To produce it, adopt an open stance and an open clubface at address, and then swing along your bodyline. The ball will fly right of where your body and feet are pointing. I have players practice this set up a few times during my golf lessons before moving on to hitting bunker shots from various distances. Below I’ll go through some of the more common scenarios where you need to get it up and down to lower your golf scores.

A bunker’s a bunker, whether fairway or greenside, right? Sorry, no.
You don’t try to hit from them the same way. Very common mistake.

Here’s something I often forget when playing from fairway bunkers (fortunately I don’t find myself in those too often, knock on wood):

GIST: When hitting from greenside bunkers, focus on adjusting just three simple factors — face, base and pace (how much to open your club face and body, and swing speed) — to help you with your distance and trajectory control.
MY TAKE: Someday, someone will need to explain how a single task that involves at least three variable factors can possibly be considered simple. And maybe even analyze why we insist on trying these tips for the first time, not to mention hope they’ll work, while right smack in the thick of playing an actual round. Very good pointers, but no magic pills in this bunch. To minimize injury or death, best fiddle around with these and determine how they affect your shots while practicing, not when a $5 Nassau’s on the line. [GO]
