Look to Cut Your Strokes

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

By Norman Stanley

Putting Tips and MoreDrive for show putt for dough the saying goes. The meaning behind this is that you will, on average use your driver eight to ten times a round, maybe a little more, maybe a little less; you will, however, use your putter on average 36 times in a regulation round, and on a good day. We have all had rounds I’m sure where the flat stick has been out of the bag 30 times in the front nine. Think about it, that’s 36 strokes, that’s half the strokes on a regular par 72 course! So miss a turn at the driving range and head for the putting green to cut your strokes.

Your actual putting stroke aside, here are five simple putting ’looks’ to get your score card into a healthier condition.

Putt Your Way to a Lower Score

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

By Jonathan S. Prentiss

Dirt on PuttingGolf is a game that requires skill, mental discipline, the desire to have fun, and a little luck. The purpose of this article is to focus on a key skill — Putting Percentage — that will allow you to better your game, have more fun, and more importantly, knock a few strokes off your total score. You don’t have to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars to improve; you just need to understand where your game needs improvement and how to improve it.

I believe the trouble most bogey golfers have is that they overprepare their swing, their setup, their delivery, their “mental game” and not spend enough time on having fun and improving specific areas of their game. We all spend countless hours working on our swings, chips, and putts at the driving range, yet how many of us know how to apply what we’ve learned out on the course?

Improving Your Putting

Dirt on PuttingHere are a few easy practice tips and exercises to help you improve your putting technique.

Maintain a square to square putter head through the ball on short putts. For these putts, the putter head should ideally move straight back and straight through, remaining square to the line of the putt at all times (as the putt gets longer, the putter head starts to move on more of a curve, coming back slightly inside the target line). To practice this, lay two clubs on the ground slightly more than a putter head’s width apart. They must run parallel to each other and directly towards the hole. As you make your stroke, keep the putter head inside the two clubs for the entire stroke. Do this at least 50 times to groove that straight back and straight through movement.

Putting Tips and MoreI realize that you get golf tips all the time, but with any luck you may not have heard about some of these and they will in turn make you a better golfer. If you’re anything like me, every little bit helps.

1. Keep your eyes where the ball was. The goal here is pretty self explanatory. We want to avoid the urge to follow the ball with our eyes. As you hit the ball, keep your eyes focused on the ground where the ball was. This is especially true with short putts.

Dirt on PuttingYou hit more shots with the putter than with any other club and for most of us, a 10% improvement in performance is going to take 3 or 4 shots off our score. Seems sensible to start here then, if we are going to win more matches. So let me give you three quick drills that will:

  • make sure your putting stroke is tuned
  • improve your distance control, and
  • increase your confidence.

Shorten Your Putt’s Backswing

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

Dirt on Putting“Quitting” on your putting stroke? That’s fairly common, and definitely undesirable. To fix it, make sure you’re accelerating through your putting stroke. And the way to ensure that is simple: shorten your putt’s backswing.

Don’t take my word for it: watch the pros. The best putters in particular, from about 6 feet out (any closer on many of today’s really fast greens, you’ll barely see a backswing). Notice that more often than not, regardless of their putting style, their putt backswings are short.
