Putting Practice is Boring!

SOURCE: U.S. Golf School Guide – Jerramy Hainline

GIST: We don’t practice putting enough! Disproportionate practice time, anyway, to how much we actually putt in a round. Hainline suggests we play putting games to liven practice up.

MY TAKE: I do practice my putting. A lot! At home, anyway. Thing is, the greens on the courses I play don’t usually have narrow 9-foot long perfectly flat green felt putting surfaces. So, I do OK with the short, flat, straight ones, but for the other 98.6% of the putts I attempt a round, Hainline’s right: I have to practice more out there on the real stuff. [GO]

A Lesson in Lagging

SOURCE: Golf.com - Private Lessons

GIST: A short, illustrated tip on how to lag those long putts up close for dirt easy tap-in second putts. The main point: Relax and swing freely.

MY TAKE: The relaxed, free and easy swing is how I try to do my lags (and all my other putts too regardless of distance, for that matter). It seems to work for me enough times, at least, to keep on doing it.

This article doesn’t mention, however, what I think is more important: Getting your derriere out on the practice green and just practicing those long lags! From what I’ve seen and experienced, regardless of how you do the stroke, put the time into it and you’ll figure something out. And frankly, I don’t think it even takes all that much time either.

Bottom line: These tips can help, but if you won’t put even the little amount of practice time needed into it, sadly those 3-putts will be the norm. [GO]
